CARNIVAL QUEEN & ATTENDANT SELECTION
Friday 5th February at the Gill Nethercott Centre
Joanna and Lauren take the honours
•
A packed Gill Nethercott Centre saw a record entry for the Selection event, run in conjunction with the Chill to This Youth Project.
The panel of specially selected judges had a hard time choosing from the entrants, with the enthusiasm and high standards of the young contenders being a credit to the town. After some tense waiting the 'winners' were finally announced although it is a hard decision when all are winners for taking part.
This year's Carnival Queen is Joanna Ashton (13) and her Attendant is Lauren Flitter (11). Joanna, a pupil at Testbourne Community school, was thrilled that she will continue a family tradition of participation in the Festival - in previous years, he grandmother was Festival Queen and her mother was an attendant. She is a committee member at her local Youth club and she holds a responsible position as a deputy-head librarian at school. Lauren also attends Testbourne school and explained that she always wanted to be a part of the festival and she thinks that it is a great opportunity to get involved in community activities.
They were presented with their sashes and prizes from HMV and will now attend the official crowning ceremony on the Millennium Meadow as part of the May Day celebrations on Saturday 1st May.
Very many thanks go to Club Leader John Wiltshire who made the judges very welcome and to the Youth Club for providing such a fun evening in an excellent venue.
Thanks also go to the judges who comprised of Vince Bradbury (Mayor), Sarah Castle (GNC), Sabrina Smith (PCSO), Graham Burgess (Meadow), Pauline Williams (Whitchurch Festival). Their's was a hard task!
The event was organised by the Festival Committee and notably Cindy Dunlop and Julia Sankey.
